Gingerbread House

Published on 3 Dec 2015
This fairytale snow-covered cottage is almost too good to eat – almost, but not quite…

INGREDIENTS

• Morrisons gingerbread house kit (all ingredients included)
• Assorted Morrisons Christmas 3D cake decorations (optional)

METHOD

1. On a clean and tidy surface, lay out the six gingerbread house pieces, with the design facing down onto the table.
2. Warm the pack of icing by massaging it with your fingers for a few minutes until it feels soft. Using scissors (children should be supervised by an adult), snip a small corner off the icing packet – around 0.5cm is ideal.
3. Pipe a thick line of icing along each edge of the front and back panels as illustrated in the video.
4. Stand one of the end panels up and firmly press one of the side panels against the strip of icing. Repeat the process with the other side panel and then place the other iced end panel on to complete the rectangle. (You could use the plastic tray included in the pack to give the structure extra support).
5. Pipe a thick line of icing along all the top edges of the house frame. Carefully place the two roof panels on the icing so that two edges meet at a peak in the middle of the house. Hold together firmly for a minute.
6. Allow at least an hour for the icing to set before you decorate or move the house. If you’ve used the plastic tray, carefully transfer the house onto a cake board now (you could pipe icing around the base of the house to keep it securely anchored).
7. Decorate with the sweets included in the pack, using the patterns on the surface of the gingerbread as a style guide. (Add optional model Christmas cake decorations in front of the house to give your gingerbread home some residents.)

Eggnog

Published on 4 Dec 2015
Cosy up in front of the fire this Christmas with a cup of eggnog, or share with friends if you’re having a party.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 pints whole milk
• 6 large free range eggs
• 50g caster sugar
• 1 tsp M signature Madagascan vanilla extract
• 150ml French brandy
• Cocoa powder, for dusting (optional)
• 300ml whipping cream or dairy spray cream (optional)

METHOD

1. Pour the milk, eggs and sugar into a medium pan. Add the vanilla extract and brandy.
2. Use a balloon whisk or wooden spoon to stir the ingredients together over a gentle heat. (The mixture will curdle if it gets too hot, so the trick is to keep it low and slow).
3. Stir continuously until the liquid thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. You can use cornflour or thickening granules if you want a thicker consistency.
4. If you want to serve your eggnog hot, pour it into heatproof glasses or mugs. For added luxury, whip up some cream and dollop on top, or reach for the spray cream. Using a sieve, dust some cocoa over the cream to finish.
5. To serve cold, place in a container and chill in the fridge. We recommend you consume your eggnog within 24 hours.
